Updated 7 September 2026

Smoky, hearty black bean patties with a firm bite and plenty of spice. The air fryer sets them into sturdy burgers that hold together far better than pan frying, ready to stack high with all your favourite trimmings.

Ingredients

  • 1 tin (400g) black beans, drained
  • 1/2 onion, finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 5 tbsp breadcrumbs
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tbsp oats
  • Spray oil

Method

  1. 1Mash the black beans, keeping some whole for texture.
  2. 2Mix in onion, garlic, breadcrumbs, tomato paste, spices and oats.
  3. 3Shape into four patties and chill for 10 minutes.
  4. 4Preheat the air fryer to 190°C (375°F).
  5. 5Mist with oil and air fry for 12-15 minutes, flipping halfway, until firm and crisp.
  6. 6Serve in toasted buns with salad and sauce.

Tips for the best results

  • Drying the beans well stops the patties turning mushy.
  • Chilling firms them up so they flip cleanly.
  • Add a slice of vegan cheese in the last minute to melt.
