Flaky, twisted cheese straws with a sharp cheddar-and-Parmesan crunch, a classic nibble for any spread. The air fryer bakes the puff pastry golden and crisp in under ten minutes.
Ingredients
- 1 sheet puff pastry
- 80 g mature cheddar, finely grated
- 30 g grated Parmesan
- 1 egg, beaten
- 1/2 tsp paprika
- 1/4 tsp cayenne (optional)
- Black pepper
Method
- 1Brush the pastry sheet with beaten egg and scatter with the cheeses, paprika, cayenne and pepper.
- 2Fold in half, press gently, then cut into 1.5 cm strips.
- 3Twist each strip several times and press the ends to hold.
- 4Preheat the air fryer to 180°C/360°F and line with perforated paper.
- 5Cook in a single layer for 8-10 minutes until golden and crisp.
- 6Cool briefly so they firm up, then serve.
Tips for the best results
- Keep the pastry cold so the twists hold their shape.
- Press the ends firmly so the straws do not untwist as they puff.
