Hearty chickpea patties spiced with cumin and garlic, crisp outside and tender within. The air fryer firms them up without the fragile flip-and-fall of pan frying, giving reliable veggie burgers every single time.

Ingredients

  • 1 tin (400g) chickpeas, drained
  • 1 small onion, grated
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 4 tbsp breadcrumbs
  • 1 tbsp flour
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 2 tbsp chopped parsley
  • Spray oil

Method

  1. 1Mash the chickpeas coarsely, leaving some texture.
  2. 2Mix in onion, garlic, breadcrumbs, flour, spices and parsley until it holds together.
  3. 3Shape into four firm patties and chill for 10 minutes.
  4. 4Preheat the air fryer to 190°C (375°F).
  5. 5Mist with oil and air fry for 12-15 minutes, flipping halfway, until golden and firm.
  6. 6Serve in buns with your favourite toppings.

Tips for the best results

  • Chilling the patties helps them keep their shape while cooking.
  • Add extra breadcrumbs if the mix feels too wet to shape.
  • Squeeze the grated onion dry to avoid soggy patties.
