Flaky, buttery pain au chocolat with a molten chocolate centre, made simple with ready-rolled puff pastry. The air fryer puffs the layers and melts the chocolate for a bakery-style breakfast treat in minutes.

Ingredients

  • 1 sheet ready-rolled puff pastry
  • 100 g (3.5 oz) dark chocolate, in batons or chunks
  • 1 egg, beaten, for glazing
  • 1 tbsp caster sugar
  • Icing sugar, for dusting

Method

  1. 1Cut the puff pastry into triangles.
  2. 2Place a line of chocolate along the wide end of each triangle.
  3. 3Roll up towards the point to enclose the chocolate and tuck the tip underneath.
  4. 4Brush with beaten egg and sprinkle with caster sugar.
  5. 5Preheat the air fryer to 175°C/350°F, line the basket with parchment, and bake for 10-13 minutes until puffed and golden.
  6. 6Cool slightly, then dust with icing sugar.

Tips for the best results

  • Chill the shaped croissants for 10 minutes before baking for a better rise.
  • Leave space between them as the pastry expands a lot.
