Crispy, lacy funnel cakes dusted with icing sugar, the fairground classic made without a vat of oil. The air fryer crisps the piped batter to a golden tangle for that nostalgic treat with far less mess.
Ingredients
- 150 g (1 1/4 cups) plain flour
- 1 tbsp caster sugar
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1 egg
- 180 ml (3/4 cup) milk
- 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
- Oil spray, for the basket
- Icing sugar, for dusting
Method
- 1Whisk the flour, sugar and baking powder, then beat in the egg, milk and vanilla to a smooth pourable batter.
- 2Pour the batter into a piping bag or squeezy bottle.
- 3Line the air-fryer basket with greased parchment and pipe the batter in overlapping swirls.
- 4Preheat the air fryer to 190°C/375°F and spray the batter lightly with oil.
- 5Air fry for 7-9 minutes, carefully flipping halfway, until crisp and golden.
- 6Dust generously with icing sugar and serve warm.
Tips for the best results
- Keep the batter fairly thick so the strands hold their lacy shape.
- A light oil spray on both sides helps them crisp up like the fried version.
