Updated 7 September 2026
Hamburger steak is a comforting patty of seasoned beef served under a rich onion gravy. The air fryer cooks the patties to a juicy finish with a browned crust, so all that is left is to spoon over the gravy and serve with mash.
Ingredients
- 600 g minced beef
- 1 small onion, grated
- 1 egg
- 3 tbsp breadcrumbs
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp salt
- ½ tsp black pepper
Method
- 1Mix the beef, onion, egg, breadcrumbs, Worcestershire and seasonings until combined.
- 2Shape into four oval patties about 2 cm thick.
- 3Preheat the air fryer to 190°C (375°F) for 3 minutes.
- 4Cook the patties for 12-16 minutes, flipping halfway, to 71°C (160°F).
- 5Rest for a couple of minutes while you warm your onion gravy.
- 6Serve smothered in gravy with mashed potato.
Tips for the best results
- A dimple pressed into the centre of each patty stops them puffing up as they cook.
- Do not overwork the mince or the patties will be dense; mix just until it holds together.
