Tender, nutmeg-scented Swedish meatballs cook evenly in the air fryer, ready to bathe in a creamy gravy. The gentle spicing and soft texture are pure comfort food, delicious over buttered noodles or mashed potato with lingonberry on the side.

Ingredients

  • 400 g minced beef
  • 200 g minced pork
  • 1 egg
  • 4 tbsp breadcrumbs
  • 3 tbsp milk
  • ½ tsp ground nutmeg
  • ½ tsp ground allspice
  • 1 tsp salt

Method

  1. 1Soak the breadcrumbs in the milk for a few minutes, then mix with the meats, egg and spices.
  2. 2Roll into small, even meatballs about 3 cm across.
  3. 3Preheat the air fryer to 190°C (375°F) for 3 minutes.
  4. 4Cook the meatballs for 10-14 minutes, shaking the basket every 8 minutes, to 71°C (160°F).
  5. 5Meanwhile whisk a simple gravy of beef stock, cream and a little flour.
  6. 6Toss the meatballs through the warm gravy and serve.

Tips for the best results

  • Soaking the breadcrumbs in milk keeps these meatballs especially soft and tender.
  • Wet your hands when rolling to stop the mixture sticking and to get smooth, even balls.
