Thin tempeh strips marinated in smoky, salty, maple-sweet sauce and crisped into a smashing plant-based bacon. The air fryer renders the edges shatteringly crisp while keeping a satisfying chew, ideal for breakfasts and sandwiches.

Ingredients

  • 1 block (225g) tempeh, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp maple syrup
  • 1 tsp liquid smoke
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1/2 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder

Method

  1. 1Slice the tempeh as thinly as you can into bacon-style strips.
  2. 2Whisk the marinade and coat the strips, leaving them 10 minutes.
  3. 3Preheat the air fryer to 180°C (360°F).
  4. 4Lay the strips in a single layer and air fry for 8-11 minutes, flipping halfway.
  5. 5Brush with a little more marinade near the end for extra glaze.
  6. 6Cool briefly to crisp up before serving.

Tips for the best results

  • The strips crisp further as they cool, so do not overcook.
  • Liquid smoke is what gives that authentic bacon aroma.
  • Layer without overlapping so every strip crisps.
