How each cheese behaves

Mozzarella melts and stretches, which is why it leads the list: pizzas, toasties, stuffed and breaded snacks all rely on it. It needs a coating or a base, because loose mozzarella runs through the basket.

Parmesan does not melt so much as crisp. It is mostly used in crumb coatings and sprinkled over vegetables, where it browns into a crust.

Halloumi and paneer hold their shape under heat, so they can go straight into the basket as pieces. Soft and grated cheese cannot: the fan lifts loose shreds into the element.

How these figures were worked out

The figures are counted from the 304 recipes published on RecipeAirFryer.com on 2026-10-08. Each recipe has one temperature, a time range, a prep time, an ingredient list and a serving count, and those fields are what is counted here.

The times and temperatures are the starting points given on each recipe page for a standard basket air fryer. They are not laboratory measurements, and air fryers differ between models, so treat the counts as a description of this recipe set, not of every air fryer.

Ingredients are counted by keyword in each recipe's ingredient list, and a recipe counts once per ingredient however many lines mention it. Spelling variants are grouped (for example "panko" with "breadcrumbs"), so the counts are close but not exact.

The comparison covers the 270 recipes outside the dessert category. Cheese types are counted across all 304 recipes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you put cheese in an air fryer?

Yes, if it is contained. Cheese inside a toastie, on a pizza base or under a crumb coating works well. Loose grated cheese blows around and melts through the basket.

What cheese is best in an air fryer?

Mozzarella for melting, parmesan for a crisp coating, and halloumi or paneer for cooking as pieces. Mozzarella is the most used, in 18 of our recipes.

What temperature do you air fry cheese dishes?

Slightly lower than plain savoury food. Recipes with cheese in our set average 185°C, so the cheese melts before the outside over-browns.
