Three things that make any recipe easier

Cook in a single layer. It is the one rule that matters more than any temperature, and almost every disappointing air fryer result traces back to a crowded basket.

Shake or flip once at halfway, and check five minutes before the recipe says. Air fryers vary more between models than ovens do, so treat every stated time as a guide rather than an instruction.

What to skip when you are starting out

Skip anything with a wet batter - it drips through the basket and bakes onto the element. Breadcrumbs work, tempura does not.

Skip loose leafy greens and anything very light, too. The fan will move them around the basket and against the heating element. Neither of those is a difficult problem, but they are frustrating first attempts.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the easiest thing to cook in an air fryer?

Frozen chips or chicken nuggets - no oil, no prep, straight from the freezer at 200°C / 400°F. For something fresh, chicken thighs are the most forgiving thing you can cook.

What should I cook first in a new air fryer?

Run it empty for 10 minutes at maximum first to burn off manufacturing residue, then cook frozen chips. They need no prep and give you a clear sense of how hot your particular model runs.

Do easy air fryer recipes need oil?

Frozen and breaded food needs none. Fresh vegetables want about a teaspoon per basket. Fatty meat needs nothing at all - it renders its own.

How do I stop overcooking things in an air fryer?

Check five minutes before the stated time, every time. Air fryers vary a lot between models, and small items in particular go from done to dry in a couple of minutes.
