Breakfast is the meal where an air fryer saves the most washing up. Bacon renders into its own fat instead of spitting across a hob, eggs cook in ramekins with no pan, and hash browns come out crisper than a frying pan manages. Most of what follows is done inside 15 minutes.

Cooking eggs without a pan

Eggs need a container - a silicone mould, a small ramekin or a foil case. Cracked straight into the basket they run through the holes. In a ramekin at 160°C / 320°F you get a reliable baked egg in 6-8 minutes.

Eggs in the shell are the exception and the party trick: 9-12 minutes at 130°C / 270°F gives you a hard-boiled egg with no water and no pan at all.

Batch cooking for the week

Egg bites, breakfast sausages and bacon all reheat well, so it is worth filling the basket once at the weekend. Cook, cool completely, then keep them in the fridge for up to three days.

Reheating takes 3-4 minutes at 160°C / 320°F - far better than a microwave, which turns crisp bacon soft and makes egg rubbery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you cook eggs in an air fryer?

Yes, but they need a container. Use a ramekin or silicone mould at 160°C / 320°F for 6-8 minutes. Eggs in the shell work too - 9-12 minutes at 130°C / 270°F for hard-boiled.

How long does bacon take in an air fryer?

7-10 minutes at 200°C / 400°F, depending on thickness and how crisp you want it. Lay the rashers flat in a single layer and pour off the rendered fat if you are cooking a second batch.

Can you make toast in an air fryer?

Yes - about 3-4 minutes at 200°C / 400°F, flipping once. It is slower than a toaster but useful if you want to melt something on top at the same time.

Is an air fryer good for breakfast?

It is the best single appliance for it. Bacon, sausages, hash browns, eggs, pastries and toast all cook well, and because it preheats in two minutes there is no waiting around first thing.
