An air fryer meal is either one recipe that is a full plate on its own, like fajitas, fish and chips or stuffed peppers, or a main and a side that share a temperature so they cook in the same basket. This page has 30 of the first kind and a table of 10 pairings for the second, with when to add each part so both finish together.

Main and side in one basket: 10 pairings that share a temperature

Times come from the individual recipe pages. A shared basket is fuller than either recipe assumes, so expect the longer end of each range, and check meat with a probe thermometer rather than the clock.

How to build a meal in one basket

Match the temperature first, then stagger the start. Two foods that both cook at 200°C / 400°F can share a basket even if one takes twice as long: the slower one goes in first and the quicker one joins partway through. The table above does that arithmetic for ten common pairings.

Keep the two foods in separate halves of the basket rather than mixed. Each still needs to sit in a single layer, which in practice means two portions in a 4-5 litre basket and four in a large or dual-drawer model. For more people, cook the main, rest it under foil, and cook the side in the hot basket while it rests.

Pairings that do not work

Anything wet next to anything you want crisp. Courgette, mushrooms and tomatoes release water as they cook, and that steam softens chips or breaded chicken sitting beside them. Cook those vegetables separately or after the main.

Raw meat above ready-to-eat food is the other one to avoid. In a stacked or racked air fryer, juices from chicken on the top shelf drip onto whatever is underneath, so put the meat on the lower level and make sure everything reaches its safe temperature.

Frozen and ready meals

Frozen breaded food, pies and pastries cook well from frozen, usually at 180-200°C / 360-400°F. A plastic-tray ready meal is different: many trays are microwave-only, and the packaging rarely gives an air fryer instruction. Unless the pack says the tray is ovenproof, move the food to an ovenproof dish that fits the basket, cover it with foil for the first two-thirds, and check it is steaming hot in the centre.

Frequently Asked Questions

What complete meals can I make in an air fryer?

Fajitas, fish and chips, sausage and peppers, stuffed peppers, burgers, enchiladas and lasagna are all full plates from one recipe. For a plain main, add a side that shares its temperature, such as chicken thighs with potato wedges at 200°C / 400°F.

What are quick air fryer meals?

Quesadillas take about 12 minutes including prep. Salmon with broccoli takes 8-12 minutes at 190°C / 375°F, and pork chops with asparagus take 10-14 minutes at 200°C / 400°F. All three are faster than heating a full oven.

Can you cook frozen meals in an air fryer?

Frozen breaded food, pies and pastries, yes, straight from frozen at 180-200°C / 360-400°F. Plastic-tray ready meals should go into an ovenproof dish first unless the pack says the tray is ovenproof, because many trays are microwave-only. Check the centre is steaming hot.

Can you cook meat and vegetables together in an air fryer?

Yes, if they share a temperature. Put the slower food in first and add the quicker one partway through. Keep them in separate halves of the basket, and keep raw meat below vegetables in a racked model so juices do not drip onto them.

What are healthy air fryer meals?

Salmon with broccoli, cod with green beans, and chicken breast with carrots. Each is a lean protein and a vegetable cooked with about a teaspoon of oil. The saving comes from the oil you do not use, so what goes in the basket still matters most.

How many people can one air fryer meal feed?

Two from a 4-5 litre basket when the main and side cook together, four from a large or dual-drawer model. Beyond that, cook in two rounds and rest the meat under foil while the side cooks.
