How to plan an air fryer dinner

Work backwards from the protein. Chicken breast, pork chops, salmon and steak all sit between 15 and 25 minutes, so pick the main first and slot a quick side around it rather than trying to cook both at once.

If you want everything ready together, cook the protein first and rest it under foil while a tray of vegetables goes in. Resting meat for five minutes actually improves it, so the side dish is free time rather than a delay.

Cooking two things in one basket

It works when both items share a temperature and a similar cook time - chicken thighs and potato wedges at 200°C, for example. Keep them in separate halves of the basket and accept that neither will be quite as crisp as it would be alone.

It does not work when one item releases moisture. Courgette, mushrooms and tomatoes steam everything next to them. Cook those separately or you will get soft chips.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the easiest air fryer dinner?

Chicken thighs. They are forgiving, need no marinade, and go from raw to crisp-skinned in about 20 minutes at 200°C / 400°F. Unlike breast, they stay juicy even if you overshoot by a few minutes.

Can you cook a full meal in an air fryer?

Yes, but usually in two stages rather than at once. Cook the protein, rest it under foil, then cook the vegetables in the hot basket. Total time is still well under what a single oven bake would take.

How many people can you feed from one air fryer?

Two to four comfortably in a 4-5L basket. Beyond that you are cooking in batches, which works fine for anything you can hold at temperature but not for something that needs to be eaten straight away.

Do air fryer dinners need oil?

A teaspoon or two, brushed or sprayed on, is enough for most mains. Fatty cuts like chicken thighs, sausages and pork belly need none at all - they render their own fat as they cook.
