Frozen vs Fresh in an Air Fryer: How Much Longer Does Frozen Take?

Published by the RecipeAirFryer editorial team · How we source times · Updated

Cooking from frozen in an air fryer takes an average of 27% longer than cooking the same food fresh, across 8 foods we hold both times for. The increase runs from 17% for meatballs to 53% for chicken breast. 4 of the 8 also drop the temperature by 10°C so the outside does not overcook while the centre thaws.

Key findings

  • Thick meat gains the most time: chicken breast needs about 11 extra minutes from frozen.
  • Vegetables gain little, around 2 minutes, because the pieces are small and thaw quickly.
  • The foods that lower the temperature from frozen are chicken breast, chicken wings, salmon and sausages.
  • None of these foods need thawing first. The frozen times assume straight from the freezer.

A rule of thumb you can use

For meat and fish, add roughly a third to a half to the fresh time and lower the temperature by 10°C / 25°F. For vegetables, add two or three minutes and keep the temperature the same.

Then check the centre. Frozen meat is the case where a thermometer matters most, because the outside can look done while the middle is still cold. Chicken needs 74°C / 165°F in the thickest part however it started.

How these figures were worked out

The comparison uses the foods in our cooking database that have both a fresh entry and a from-frozen entry for the same item. Times are the midpoint of each stated range.

These are stated starting-point times for a standard basket air fryer, not laboratory measurements. Piece size changes the result more than anything else.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much longer does frozen food take in an air fryer?

About 27% longer on average across 8 foods. Thick meat needs up to 53% more time, and some foods as little as 17%.

Should you lower the temperature for frozen food in an air fryer?

For raw meat and fish, yes, by about 10°C / 25°F, so the outside does not dry out before the centre thaws. 4 of the 8 foods we compared do this. Vegetables stay at the same temperature.

Can you cook frozen chicken breast in an air fryer?

Yes. Cook at 180°C / 350°F for 28-33 min, flipping halfway, until the thickest part reaches 74°C / 165°F.
