What the oil is doing
In a deep fryer, oil is the cooking medium. In an air fryer the air does the cooking, and the oil is a thin coating that helps the surface brown and holds the seasoning on. That is why the amounts are small and why they do not scale up with the size of the batch.
Fresh vegetables and potatoes need that coating, or they dry out and turn leathery. Fatty meat and frozen breaded food do not, because one carries its own fat and the other was par-fried at the factory.
The calorie figures here cover the oil in the ingredient list only. They are not a nutrition analysis of the finished dish, and some of the oil stays in the basket.
How these figures were worked out
The figures are counted from the 304 recipes published on RecipeAirFryer.com on 2026-10-08. Each recipe has one temperature, a time range, a prep time, an ingredient list and a serving count, and those fields are what is counted here.
The times and temperatures are the starting points given on each recipe page for a standard basket air fryer. They are not laboratory measurements, and air fryers differ between models, so treat the counts as a description of this recipe set, not of every air fryer.
Ingredients are counted by keyword in each recipe's ingredient list, and a recipe counts once per ingredient however many lines mention it. Spelling variants are grouped (for example "panko" with "breadcrumbs"), so the counts are close but not exact.
Oil is counted where a line gives a quantity in teaspoons or tablespoons followed by an oil. A tablespoon is taken as three teaspoons. Butter and other fats are not counted as oil.
Calories use about 40 kcal per teaspoon of oil, from the USDA FoodData Central figure of 884 kcal per 100 g for olive oil and roughly 4.5 g per teaspoon.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do you need oil in an air fryer?
Not always. 44% of the 304 recipes we counted use none. Fresh vegetables and potatoes need about a tablespoon per basket to brown; fatty meat and frozen breaded food need none.
How much oil do you put in an air fryer?
Usually 1 tbsp for the whole recipe, tossed with the food and never poured into the basket. That is the median across 129 recipes that measure oil.
How many calories does oil add to air fryer food?
About 30 calories per serving at the median, based on 40 kcal per teaspoon. Some of that stays in the basket.
