Air fryers are safer than deep fryers - there is no pan of hot oil to spill or catch fire. The genuine risks are different: loose light material reaching the element, blocked vents, and steam when you open the drawer.

This is the single rule worth internalising: if it could blow around, it does not go in loose. Weigh parchment down with food before the basket goes in.
Ventilation and placement
Air fryers exhaust a lot of hot air from the back. Pushed against a wall or under a low cupboard, that heat recirculates and the unit can overheat or damage the surface behind it.
