How Many Air Fryer Batches Before the Oven Is Cheaper?

Published by the RecipeAirFryer editorial team · How we source times · Updated

Two batches in an air fryer use less electricity than one load in an electric oven at every cooking time from 6 to 40 minutes. A third batch only stays cheaper than the oven when each batch takes 15 minutes or less. Beyond that, one full oven tray wins.

Key findings

  • For a 10-minute food the air fryer stays cheaper for up to 3.6 batches. For a 30-minute food the limit is 2.5 batches.
  • The break-even point does not depend on the electricity price, only on the wattages, preheat times and cooking time.
  • Short cooks favour the air fryer because the oven preheat is a fixed cost that a quick batch can undercut several times over.
  • A family of four or more cooking a 25-minute main in three batches would use less energy in the oven.

What this means for a household

One or two people rarely need a second batch, so the air fryer is the cheaper appliance for almost everything. Three or four people can usually stay within two batches, where the air fryer still wins.

Past that, look at the cooking time. Quick foods like fish fingers or asparagus can run three or four batches and still undercut the oven. A slow main in three batches cannot, and it also leaves the first batch going cold.

A larger or dual-drawer air fryer moves the line, because it does two batches at once. It also draws more power, so use its own wattage in the calculator.

How these figures were worked out

Energy is calculated, not metered: rated wattage multiplied by minutes of use. The air fryer is taken as 1,500 W with a 3-minute preheat. The oven is taken as 2,400 W with a 12-minute preheat. These are the default figures in our running cost calculator.

Air fryer minutes come from the recipe page. Oven minutes are the air fryer minutes divided by 0.8, which is the site's standard conversion (an air fryer takes about 80% of the oven time).

Prices are 26.32p per kWh (Ofgem price cap, October to December 2026) and 18.31¢ per kWh (EIA U.S. residential average, July 2026). Standing charges and taxes other than those already in the unit rate are left out, because they do not change with how you cook.

Both appliances switch their element off and on once they reach temperature, so every figure here is an upper limit. The gap between the two is a fair guide; the absolute numbers on your bill will be lower. Check the rating plate on your own appliances and your own tariff, then use the calculator for a figure that fits your kitchen.

Batches are cooked one after another with a single preheat. The oven is assumed to hold the whole quantity in one load.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is an air fryer cheaper than an oven for a family?

Up to two batches, yes at every cooking time. A third batch only stays cheaper when each batch takes 15 minutes or less. For a slow main cooked in three or more batches, one oven load uses less electricity.

How many batches can an air fryer do before the oven is cheaper?

Between 2.4 and 4.7 batches, depending on the cook time. Shorter cooks allow more batches.

Does the electricity price change the answer?

No. Both appliances are billed at the same rate, so the price cancels out. Only wattage, preheat and cooking time matter.
