How Wide Is the Cooking Window in Air Fryer Recipes?
Published by the RecipeAirFryer editorial team · How we source times · Updated
The median air fryer recipe gives a cooking window just 3 minutes wide, such as "10-13 minutes". In 128 of 304 recipes (42%) the window is 2 minutes or less. That is why checking early matters more in an air fryer than in an oven: the gap between done and overdone is small.
Key findings
- Only 22 recipes have a window wider than 6 minutes, and almost all of them are roasts, joints and long bakes.
- The widest ordinary window is roast beef at 30-45 min.
- As a share of the cook, the median window is 25% of the shortest time.
- A narrow window on a short cook is the least forgiving combination. Small, thin foods need watching.

A wide window is a sign that size varies. A baked potato or a joint of meat can be half as big again as the one the recipe assumed, so the range has to stretch to cover it.
For those foods, use the internal temperature or the knife test instead of the clock. For everything with a 2-minute window, set the timer to the shorter figure and look.
How these figures were worked out
The figures are counted from the 304 recipes published on RecipeAirFryer.com on 2026-10-08. Each recipe has one temperature, a time range, a prep time, an ingredient list and a serving count, and those fields are what is counted here.
The times and temperatures are the starting points given on each recipe page for a standard basket air fryer. They are not laboratory measurements, and air fryers differ between models, so treat the counts as a description of this recipe set, not of every air fryer.
The window is the longer stated time minus the shorter one.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why do air fryer recipes give a time range?
Because air fryers differ in power and basket size, and food differs in thickness. The range covers a typical spread, and you check at the shorter end.
Should I use the shortest or longest air fryer time?
Set the timer to the shortest and check. The median window in our recipes is only 3 minutes, so starting at the top of the range risks overcooking.
Why does my air fryer cook faster than the recipe says?
A higher wattage, a smaller basket or a lighter load all shorten the cook. Recipes are written for a typical 4 to 6 litre basket, so check a few minutes early until you know your model.
