14 Chicken Cuts in the Air Fryer, Compared by Time and Temperature
Published by the RecipeAirFryer editorial team · How we source times · Updated
Chicken in an air fryer takes anywhere from 8 minutes for popcorn chicken to 60 minutes for a whole bird. 7 of the 14 cuts cook at 200°C / 400°F, and every one of them is done when the thickest part reaches 74°C / 165°F. The cut decides the time; the internal temperature never changes.
Key findings
- Bone-in, skin-on cuts cook hottest: chicken drumsticks, crispy chicken wings, chicken thighs and chicken legs all use 200°C / 400°F.
- Chicken breast cooks at 190°C / 375°F, lower than the dark cuts, because it has no fat to protect it from drying.
- A whole chicken costs about 38.2p or 26.5¢ to roast, against 7.9p or 5.5¢ for popcorn chicken.
- All 14 recipes list 74°C / 165°F as the target.

Why the cuts differ
Thickness and bone set the time. Tenders and nuggets are thin and boneless, so heat reaches the middle in minutes. A thigh on the bone is thicker and the bone slows the heat, so it needs twice as long.
Fat sets the temperature. Skin-on dark meat has fat under the skin that needs high heat to render, and enough of it to stay juicy while that happens. Breast is lean, so it is cooked a little cooler and pulled the moment it reaches temperature.
A whole chicken is the exception to the high-heat rule. It is cooked cooler so the outside does not burn in the long time the centre takes.
How these figures were worked out
The figures are counted from the 304 recipes published on RecipeAirFryer.com on 2026-10-08. Each recipe has one temperature, a time range, a prep time, an ingredient list and a serving count, and those fields are what is counted here.
The times and temperatures are the starting points given on each recipe page for a standard basket air fryer. They are not laboratory measurements, and air fryers differ between models, so treat the counts as a description of this recipe set, not of every air fryer.
Energy cost uses a 1,500 W air fryer with a 3-minute preheat at 26.32p per kWh (Ofgem price cap, October to December 2026) and 18.31¢ per kWh (EIA U.S. residential average, July 2026). It is an upper limit, because the element cycles once the basket is hot.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does chicken take in an air fryer?
From 8-10 min for popcorn chicken to 50-60 min for a whole chicken. Breast takes 18-22 min and bone-in thighs 22-26 min.
What temperature do you cook chicken in an air fryer?
Most cuts at 200°C / 400°F. Breast is usually a little lower, at 190°C / 375°F, and a whole chicken lower again at 180°C / 360°F.
How do you know when air fryer chicken is done?
When the thickest part reaches 74°C / 165°F on a probe thermometer, away from the bone. Colour and time are not reliable, because air fryers and cut sizes vary.
