Breaded vs Unbreaded Air Fryer Recipes: What the Coating Costs in Time
Published by the RecipeAirFryer editorial team · How we source times · Updated
47 of 270 savoury air fryer recipes (17%) use a crumb coating of breadcrumbs, panko or cornmeal. The coating adds prep, not cooking: breaded recipes take a median of 15 minutes to prepare against 10 for unbreaded ones, while the cook time is 11 minutes against 12.
Key findings
- Breaded recipes use a median of 8 ingredients, against 6 for unbreaded ones.
- They cook hotter, at an average of 193°C against 187°C, because the crumb needs high heat to colour.
- 17 of the 47 specify panko.
- 42 use egg to hold the coating on.

A dry crumb works in an air fryer and a wet batter does not. Batter drips through the basket before it sets, while crumbs pressed onto an egg wash stay put.
Spray or brush the coating lightly with oil before cooking. Dry crumbs with no fat on them stay pale and dusty however long they are in the basket.
How these figures were worked out
The figures are counted from the 304 recipes published on RecipeAirFryer.com on 2026-10-08. Each recipe has one temperature, a time range, a prep time, an ingredient list and a serving count, and those fields are what is counted here.
The times and temperatures are the starting points given on each recipe page for a standard basket air fryer. They are not laboratory measurements, and air fryers differ between models, so treat the counts as a description of this recipe set, not of every air fryer.
Ingredients are counted by keyword in each recipe's ingredient list, and a recipe counts once per ingredient however many lines mention it. Spelling variants are grouped (for example "panko" with "breadcrumbs"), so the counts are close but not exact.
This study covers the 270 recipes outside the dessert category. A recipe counts as breaded if its ingredient list includes breadcrumbs, panko, cornflakes, crushed crackers or cornmeal.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you use breadcrumbs in an air fryer?
Yes. 47 of the savoury recipes we counted use a crumb coating. Press the crumbs on firmly, spray them lightly with oil, and cook in a single layer.
Why does breaded food take longer in an air fryer?
It does not cook for longer, but it takes longer to prepare: a median of 15 minutes of prep against 10 for unbreaded recipes, because of the flour, egg and crumb stages.
Can you use wet batter in an air fryer?
No. Wet batter drips through the basket and onto the element before it sets. Use a dry crumb coating over an egg wash instead.
